Did You Know —In the jazz scene of the 1920s, “the big apple” was a metaphor for hitting the jackpot — succeed with your music in New York and you’d truly made it. Sports writer John J. Fitz Gerald later popularized “the Big Apple” in his column, referring to the big money to be earned at Belmont Park and Aqueduct racetracks. The nickname faded in the 1950s but was revived by a 1970s New York Convention and Visitors Bureau campaign, and it’s been the city’s official epithet ever since.
